James Neff

James Neff is a prize-winning author and the assistant managing editor for investigations at Philadelphia Media Network. He has written five nonfiction books, including The Wrong Man: The Final Verdict on the Dr. Sam Sheppard Murder Case and Vendetta: Bobby Kennedy vs. Jimmy Hoffa.

His biography of Teamster president Jackie Presser, Mobbed Up, was adapted as the HBO movie “Teamster Boss,” and won the Thomas Renner Award from Investigative Reporters and Editors, a 4,500-member nonprofit organization that trains journalists worldwide. He served on IRE’sboard of directors for a decade, including a term as its president.

Neff was investigations editor at The Seattle Times from 2001 to May 2016. Five investigations he edited or co-reported have been Pulitzer Prize finalists. He directed and edited three Pulitzer Prize winners, including the 2012 Pulitzer winner for investigative reporting, “Methadone and the Politics of Pain.”

From 1994 to 1999, he was the Kiplinger Professor and directed the Kiplinger Mid-Career Fellowship Program at the Ohio State University’s School of Journalism. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame (BA) and the University of Texas at Austin (MA).
