Annual Report

Funding Goals: 2011-2012

As the media landscape changes and new challenges to government transparency emerge, the Reporters Committee is evolving to continually meet the needs of both the established news organizations who have relied on its services and resources for more than four decades, as well as the new digital media reporters who launch each day on ever-developing platforms.

Most citizens rely on media to analyze and report the information they need to make decisions at the ballot box. To do this, journalists have always fought for access to government information.

Looking ahead to funding priorities for the next 12 months, the Reporters Committee has identified several priority funding goals providing donors myriad ways to support open government.

These priority funding areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Ongoing development of the Reporters Committee website. Additional support is needed to continue the redesign and backend development for the site that will enable it to offer improved navigation, better user interface, increased search engine optimization and overall a better flow, usability and continuity between pages.
  • Additional sites for regional workshops for digital journalists, and new webinars. Initial response to the first wave of free regional workshops on government access and legal issues for online investigative reporting sites has been overwhelming. With new support for these initiatives, additional workshops can be scheduled around the country. A new series of webinars to reach a wider audience is also planned.
  • Expansion of the Freedom of Information Service Center. The Reporters Committee's unique FOI Service Center is dedicated to providing guidance, research and support on government transparency issues. As the obstacles to that transparency increase, the Center's mission has expanded and will continue to do so. Continued financial support for the Center's operations and expansion is an ongoing need.
  • Education and outreach about Reporters Committee programs and services. As the Reporters Committee grows its services and programs to new audiences so, too, must its outreach expand to ensure that those in need know where to turn for help. To reach these journalists, especially those in digital media who not come from a "traditional" journalism school path, the Reporters Committee needs continued support for its outreach efforts, undertaken both in person and online.
  • Coalition building. The Reporters Committee has taken a leadership role in networking with others — media and non-media — in the transparency community. To continue those efforts, the Reporters Committee needs financial support for its operating fund.
