The ACLU, the Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic at Yale Law School, Google and Microsoft filed three separate cases before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA Court). The two tech companies are seeking authorization to release general data about the number of secret orders issued by the court for users’ data, while the ACLU group are seeking access to opinions filed by the court that have precedential value. The Reporters Committee, joined by 14 media organizations, filed an amicus brief emphasizing the public’s First Amendment interests in finding out how this powerful yet secretive court operates.
