Summary of statute(s): An individual who is a party to either an in-person conversation or electronic communication, or who has the consent of one of the parties to the communication, can lawfully record it or disclose its contents, unless the person is doing so for the purpose of committing a criminal or tortious act. Wyo. Stat. Ann. § 7-3-702 (2012).

Delinquency and dependency proceedings: Except in hearings to declare a person in contempt of court, juvenile court proceedings are generally closed to the public in Wyoming. But individuals with a proper interest in the proceedings or in the work of the court — a category of people that seemingly includes members of the news media pursuant to another statutory provision discussed below — may be admitted. Wyo. Stat. Ann. §§ 14-6-224, 14-6-424 (2011).

Nov. 5, 2007  ·   After first agreeing to release the contents of a criminal file that was the subject of a tampering investigation, a Wyoming judge reversed course and sealed the entire file three days later.

Billings Gazette reporter Ruffin Prevost, working out of the newspaper's Northwest Wyoming bureau in Cody, Wyo., requested a copy of an unsealed criminal file against Alex R. Gonzalez after anonymously receiving a copy of a motion filed by the public defender to stay proceedings in the Big Horn County case.
