Reporter arrests

 A Newark, N.J. police officer was suspended Monday after he arrested and physically restrained a news cameraman, The Associated Press reported.

Local CBS cameraman Jim Quodomine was covering an anti-violence rally on Sunday when he was arrested for disorderly conduct. Once he had been detained, video shows Officer Brian Sharif putting Quodomine in a choke hold, The AP said.

Trespass charges filed during the Democratic National Convention in August against an ABC News producer will be dropped, ABC reported.

"We are enormously gratified that the Denver city attorney has agreed to drop these outrageous charges," said Jeffrey Schneider, senior vice president of ABC News.

A federal judge on Wednesday tossed a lawsuit brought by The Phoenix New Times against the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office over the arrests of two newspaper executives, according to The Associated Press.  

Freelance photographer Jason Nicholas made news earlier this month as one of the unlucky journalists arrested in St. Paul during the Republican National Convention. But while the city claims it's backing off charges against the reporters, it looks like Nicholas's latest legal saga is just getting underway, as he sits in jail in New York.

Kauai police backed off a trespass charge against a Hawaii-based journalist at the last minute Wednesday, deciding as she turned herself in that she had been "covered by the First Amendment" when she reported on a protest at a home construction site last month.

Prosecutors will not pursue charges against a Texas journalist who was arrested last year while reporting a story on security in Amarillo hospitals, The Associated Press reported.

With the pepper spray cleared and the flash-bang grenades gone, the Minnesota Independent newspaper has put together a list of journalists who were detained or arrested around the Republican National Convention. The total: at least 42.

More than a dozen journalists were cited and released in St. Paul Thursday night after they were penned in with a group of protesters arrested on a bridge.

A New York Post freelance photographer was released from jail in St. Paul on Wednesday, two days after he was arrested covering the protests at the Republican National Convention.

Jason Nicholas, a credentialed photographer who freelances for the international photo agency Atlas Press and the Post, was arrested in St. Paul on Monday afternoon with several other photographers and journalists, including Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, Associated Press photographer Matt Rourke and journalism students Ed Matthews and Britney McIntosh.    

More news about journalists arrested while covering Monday's protests outside the Republican National Convention: Radio host Amy Goodman pressed the St. Paul police chief at a press conference Tuesday for an accounting of her detainment, while two University of Kentucky journalism students and a photo adviser were expected to spend a second night sitting in jail awaiting riot charges.
