Funding the fight for a free press
Over the last year, more than two dozen journalists nationwide fought subpoenas to provide testimony in federal court proceedings. And, no doubt, you've heard about the continuing attacks on the public's right to know by state and federal officials who believe the only way to keep the country safe is to restrict useful public information.
Since 1970, the Reporters Committee has battled encroachments on the freedom of the press. We need your help to insure that we can continue to be the leading voice protecting the First Amendment rights for future generations.
In November 2005, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded the Reporters Committee a $2.5 million challenge grant to be used for an endowment campaign and operating support. Under the conditions of the grant, the Foundation will match dollar for dollar contributions designated for the endowment (up to $1 million); and contributions designated to this project for operating support (up to $1 million).
We need your help to meet this challenge. Our goal is to build a foundation that will allow us to continue our efforts in providing round-the-clock, cost-free legal defense and research services.
