Since the founding of the Reporters Committee in 1970, we have been involved in all major court cases, answered tens of thousands of legal hot-line calls, assisted hundreds of reporters who sought local or federal government records, taught countless seminars on free press issues and have maintained a network of volunteer lawyers in all 50 states to help journalists in legal trouble. In fact, in 35 years, no journalist in need of a legal defense who has come to us for help has ever had to personally pay for a lawyer. It is a remarkable achievement.
