From 1970 to 2020: Celebrating 50 years of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

Celebrating a 50-Year Legacy

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press was founded in 1970 by a small group of journalists who banded together to fight for the right to protect their sources against government subpoenas. Today, the Reporters Committee is the leading nonprofit organization providing legal services to reporters and news organizations — at no cost to them.

2020 Honorees

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press recognizes journalism and media law leaders whose work demonstrates a deep commitment to the First Amendment and press freedom at its annual Freedom of the Press Awards Dinner. The Reporters Committee also presents an annual Rising Star Award to honor young leaders who are forwarding the cause of press freedom.
