Demi Vitkute

Journalism Intern, Summer 2017

Demi Vitkute is a journalism intern with the Reporters Committee. She received her master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 2017. During her time in New York City, she covered business, higher education, and real estate news.

Demi graduated from Emerson College in Boston in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. She worked as a reporter for several TV stations and news outlets. She currently writes for and edits a website she co-founded about New York and London entrepreneurs.

Demi is originally from Lithuania. She was inspired to become a journalist at a young age because of her country’s history. In the 19th century, when the Russian Empire banned the Lithuanian language press, a group of Lithuanians, called book smugglers, saved the Lithuanian language by printing and illegally smuggling the Lithuanian press across the border to the people. If caught, they were shot or deported to Siberia.
