Jose Ochoa

Intern
As an intern for the Reporters Committee, Jose Ochoa will report stories in the media related to first amendment rights, journalists’ rights and press freedom. Jose will also report on RCFP’s past legal cases and history and contribute to the Reporters’ Committee’s communications team.
 
Jose is interning through the University of California’s UCDC program. At UC Santa Barbara, Jose studied English and worked as the news editor of the Daily Nexus, a student-run, independent newspaper, where he was presented the campus’ George Obern Award for Excellence in Writing in 2017. 
 
Jose reported on government in Santa Barbara County and at UCSB and its nearby college-town, Isla Vista, working as a writer, photographer and member of the Nexus’ editorial staff.
 
Jose also covered Orange County government as a reporting intern for Voice of OC, an investigative newsroom. 
 
As an intern with Voice of OC, Jose covered the issue of homelessness in Anaheim and the local governments’ attempts to mitigate the crisis, as well as other topics including the newly-formed county ethics commission and reports of abuse in the county’s jails.
 
Jose will graduate from UC Santa Barbara with a B.A. in English in June 2018.
