Two national surveys conducted just before national Sunshine Week indicate that Americans strongly support open government and are concerned about government secrecy. In one survey, 81 percent of the respondents said democracy requires government openness; in the other, 62 percent said public access to government records is critical. And 64 percent said they considered the federal government secretive. (3/10/06)
