Training: Journalist safety training at the Collaborative Journalism Summit

The International Women’s Media Foundation will lead a half-day journalist safety training at this year’s Collaborative Journalism Summit. Participants will learn core skills in risk-assessment and mitigation, personal security, covering protests and civil unrest, guidance on personal protection equipment, digital safety and a legal know-your-rights session led by the Reporters Committee’s Christina Piaia.
Webinar: Journalist safety in the U.S.: Crowds, protests, and events

The Reporters Committee’s Jen Nelson will join this webinar to discuss practical advice for journalists covering events in the U.S — including best practices for covering protests, interacting with police and federal law enforcement, and crossing borders. Journalists will learn about securing their devices, their legal rights at the border and during newsgathering, and de-escalation techniques in a hostile crowd.
This webinar is being organized by the U.S. Journalist Assistance Network, a coalition of U.S. press freedom organizations specializing in journalist safety and assistance.

Freedom House will honor the Reporters Committee with the Edward R. Murrow Guardian of Democracy Award, recognizing the impact of our pro bono legal services in defending journalists and our staunch advocacy of press freedom.

The Reporters Committee’s Eric Feder will participate in a session, “Freelancer liability in an era of science denial,” where experts will take a fresh look at legal vulnerability for healthcare journalists — the law, liability insurance, ways to minimize your exposure and where to turn if you’re threatened with a lawsuit.
