The journalist’s dilemma, write five journalism deans in taking up the growing controversy over publication of secret information, “lies in choosing between the risk that would result from disclosure and the parallel risk of keeping the public in the dark” Their discussion, in the Washington Post, capped weeks of controversy over the media’s rights and responsibilities after the New York Times and several other papers published reports on the U.S. secretly obtaining international banking records in an effort to track terrorist activities.
