VIRGINIA–Virginia residents will be able to receive from the state the names of recently released inmates who live in their zip code under a policy initiated in early July by state agencies, according to The Washington Post.
Officials told the newspaper that the state’s new computer database, which they began putting together in March, will also give residents names of offenders who are still under court supervision.
By contacting the Department of Public Safety, residents can get on a mailing list to receive such information monthly, the department said. The list will included the person’s name, age, and address and the crime for which the person was convicted. Requesters will be charged 15 cents a page for photocopying.
Residents also will be able to find out whether an individual has a criminal record and is under court supervision. All the computerized data are based on public court documents, according to the department.
