Will Iowa’s Public Safety Commissioner Open Police Records?

Iowa’s public safety commissioner promised the Des Moines Register that he will consider finding better ways to release information on incidents and arrests, but Commissioner Kevin Techau said he found no reason to release records of alleged misconduct by police or prosecutors. And he defended the public safety department’s policy of not releasing written reports of incidents and folding otherwise public information into confidential investigative reports. “I’ve not heard any suggestion that we are not in compliance with the law,” he said.
