FOIA Requests Top 4 million, Backlog Increases Too

The Coalition has developed two new reports, one providing a detailed look at the government-wide performance of federal agencies in handling FOIA requests and the other a statistical review of FOIA litigation over the past six years. The first shows FOIA use topped four million requests in fiscal 2004, and that the departments and agencies fell even further behind in responding to requests. And the two reports together provide statistical support to the concern that the odds are stacked against those who appeal FOIA denials or sue to get withheld records. (8/17/05)
