Senate Won’t Press Warrantless Surveillance Investigation

The Senate Intelligence Committee in closed session voted not to investigate the White House’s approval of warrantless domestic surveillance and instead create a seven-member committee that would monitor the National Security Agency program. It was a party-line vote that Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., described “an accommodation with the WhiteHouse.” Meanwhile, a proposal by Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, to allow secret surveillance for 45 days gained some traction among committee members. (3/8/06)
