Support Grows for Posting of Government-Funded Health Research

Support is building for a new federal policy that would require government-funded health researchers to make their results freely available on the Internet. Most are now published in journals that charge as much as $35 to see an article. Private publishers have fought that kind of free public access but the Washington Post reports that a key federal advisory committee has recommended that scientists who receive NIH grants be required to post their results within six months of publication.
