San Jose Council Met Secretly, Voted Subsidy for Soccer Team

A San Jose City Council meeting closed to the public so council members could discuss a possible real estate deal turned into a freewheeling discussion of inducements to keep the local soccer team – and a vote to provide a generous subsidy to the team. The San Jose Mercury News said that the discussion at the meeting last November and the vote, both possible violations of state law, were kept secret until the council agreed to release the minutes in early June.
