The Air Force Research Laboratory has declined to administer a controversial grant to St. Mary’s University Law School in San Antonio, to study the impact of national security concerns on state public records laws. A spokesman told Secrecy News that the study “was more of a (policy) project than bona fide research.” Early reports indicated the research project was oriented toward limiting public disclosure of information. But the school and Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX, the funding’s sponsor, said the intent was just the opposite. The lab’s decision leaves the program at risk. (8/9/06)
