A federal judge in San Francisco said two Chronicle reporters must disclose their sources for stories about grand jury testimony by Barry Bonds and other athletes on the use of steroids, reports that prompted Major League Baseball to adopt new rules for players. Judge Jeffrey White said the court should not engage in “a balancing test that would require it to place greater value on the reporting of certain news stories over others.” The Chronicle said it will appeal. Both reporters, Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, said they will continue to refuse to reveal their sources. (8/16/06)
