The costs of federal secrecy rose almost 15 percent to $9.2 billion in 2005, the Information Security Oversight Office reported. The government’s cost of classifying and keeping secret information rose to $7.7 billion while the cost to industries working with secret data rose to $1.5 billion. ISOO earlier reported that the volume of classification decisions had dropped in 2005 by nine percent to 14.2 million. (8/25/06)
