A House Government Affairs subcommittee approved the OPEN Government Act, a Freedom of Information Act reform measure, adding a provision calling for the rollback of memos by former Attorney General John Ashcroft and former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card that directed agencies to tighten controls on information. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the legislation last week, without the section rebuking Bush Administration directives. (9/29/06)
