Judge Orders Release of More Detainee Information

A federal judge told the Department of Defense it cannot keep the names of Guantanamo detainees secret on the grounds that it protects their privacy. “The public interest in disclosing government malfeasance is well-established,” District Judge Jed S. Rakoff said of the government refusal to release documents requested by the Associated Press on detainees who were transferred or released or who suffered mistreatment by their handlers or other detainees. The AP said the judge’s order was “a resounding victory for the public’s right to know.” (9/21/06)
