Secrecy Lowering Americans’ Confidence in Federal Government

Americans are increasingly suspicious of a federal government they see as cloaked in secrecy, but they are feeling better about their state and local governments because of increasing transparency at those levels, a new poll conducted as a part of Sunshine Week shows. The poll results suggest that news reports of electronic surveillance helped harden public concerns – by a 2-1 margin they said the federal law enforcement agencies should have to go to court to get warrants before tapping phones.
