A Records Stack Taller Than the Capitol Pulled from Public View

More than a million pages of historical documents — a stack taller than the U.S. Capitol — have been removed from public view at the National Archives since the September 2001 terrorist attacks, according to records obtained by The Associated Press. Some of the papers are more than a century old. In some cases, entire file boxes were removed. The withdrawal of records began in November 2001 in response to a Justice Department directive to be more cautious in release of information to the public. (3/15/07)
