Virginia’s Attorney General said in an opinion that the database on concealed-handgun owners maintained by state police should not be released to the public. AG Robert McDonnell said that, under the state’s Freedom of Information law, police have the discretion to release the information but that this is circumvented by another state law that limits the use of the information to law enforcement personnel. The opinion was requested by a state representative after the Roanoke Times published the database online. (4/9/07)
