Connecticut Republican Rep. Chris Shays and two Democrat colleagues, Jay Inslee, WA, and David Price, NC, have filed a bill that would require the Congressional Research Service to make their regular reports to Congress available online. The reports, highly valued for their and neutral assessment of legislative, have never been released to the public but many reports are obtained informally through Congress members. The bill would not make the reports public until 30 days after being posted on the closed congressional web site. That means commercial vendors who have unauthorized but real time access to the reports and would still profit under the bill, Secrecy News noted. (6/11/07)
