GAO Investigation Transcripts May Become Less Public

The Government Accountability Office has issued a new rule that gives agencies being investigated a greater say in the release of transcripts of audit interviews. Previously, transcripts of interviews made by congressional auditors were available to the public. Under the new policy, top agency officials will be allowed to “advise” GAO on whether the record of the interview should be exempt from disclosure. The GAO said witnesses may be more candid if their comments aren’t public record. (9/6/07)
