FOIA Files III: Industry, Towns Foul Half of Pennsylvania’s Waters

An environmental group in Pennsylvania used the Freedom of Information Act to check on whether industry and municipal facilities that discharge wastes into state waters are complying with the federal Clean Water Act. It discovered that more than half didn’t meet the standards. “More than 14,000 miles of rivers and streams in Pennsylvania—are unsafe for swimming and fishing,” PennEnvironment said in “Troubled Waters,” a report on the findings.
