Charges Against Arizona Newspaper Executives Dropped, Prosecutor Fired

The criminal case against the Phoenix New Times and two of its executives, prompted by their reporting on the Maricopa County sheriff, crumbled as soon as it became public. County Attorney Andrew Thomas withdrew the charges against the executives for publishing details of a grand jury subpoena seeking addresses and user information about New Times Internet readers. Thomas also dismissed the special prosecutor he had appointed shortly after the State Bar Association confirmed that it has launched an investigation. (10/22/07)
