AG Appoints Prosecutor to Probe CIA Destructioon of Tapes

Attorney General Michael Mukasey appointed a veteran federal prosecutor from Connecticut to lead a criminal investigation into the destruction of terrorist interrogation tapes by the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA admits that in 2005 it destroyed the tapes of its questioning of two al-Qaida suspects. The destruction came five months after a federal judge had ordered that the government safeguard “all evidence and information regarding the torture, mistreatment and abuse” of detainees at Guantanamo.
