In the Interest of Three (Suppressed) Minors (ProPublica Prior Restraint)

Post categories

  1. Prior restraint

The Reporters Committee filed an amici letter on behalf of a media coalition in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, Child Protection Division, in support of ProPublica, which challenged a court order prohibiting it and “any and all other media” from publishing names and other information about three minors. The amici letter argues that the court order is a prior restraint and that the court cannot prohibit the news media from publishing information they have lawfully obtained absent the most compelling circumstances and in the most exceptional cases.
