Army Calls Classification Standards Unclear, Develops New Guidelines

The Army has set new standards for classification of information, noting that both current regulations and executive orders are “broad and not clearly defined” The result, the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. John F. Kimmons, said, is that many classifications determinations are “purely subjective.” His memo added, “Over classification is costly, inefficient and can cause slow downs …. Under classification can cause compromise, inadvertent disclosures and confusion.” (11/8/06)
