PRSA Counselors Academy: Support press freedom in Charleston
As PR professionals, we depend on a free and independent press. At this year’s PRSA Counselors Academy Conference in Charleston, we have an opportunity to give back by supporting the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP).
The Reporters Committee provides pro bono legal services to journalists, ensuring they can report without fear of legal threats. Its work — including a 24/7 legal hotline, newsroom training, pre-publication vetting, and court advocacy — protects press freedom and transparency.
With recent challenges facing the Associated Press and other news organizations, its work is more critical than ever. As Counselors Academy members, we can make a real impact.
This year, the PRSA Counselors Academy is supporting the Reporters Committee’s free legal hotline for journalists across the country, and its rapid response legal support. When a journalist faces the threat of a subpoena, or the confiscation of newsgathering equipment, or simply needs support accessing a public record or identifying what she can safely record, the Reporters Committee is there, 24/7.
Hundreds of journalists nationwide call the hotline each year and benefit from free, timely information about their First Amendment rights.
