Coalition Sues to Put California Courts Under Records, Meetings Laws

The California First Amendment Coalition and the Riverside Press-Enterprise filed suit in Superior Court to unseal a settlement the court struck with a former employee. They argue that Proposition 59 adopted by voters last year brings the courts under the state’s open records and meetings laws for the first time. The suit draws a distinction between records of case-deciding functions, which may require confidentiality, and administrative functions, which it says should be public like every other public entity.
