The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, in a party-line vote, approved a bill that would seriously erode the public’s right to information about safety hazards at wastewater treatment plants that store significant quantities of chlorine gas. The bill, S 2781, would override state law as well. Operators would only have to certify their security and safety plans to the Department of Homeland Security. It is not entitled to a copy.
