The San Francisco Chronicle asked a federal court to quash subpoenas for two reporters to reveal their source of grand jury testimony in the BALCO sports steroids investigation. The newspaper’s motion argues that the public good which resulted from publication of the stories – action by Congress and Major League Baseball to end illegal steroid use – greatly outweighs the government’s interest in knowing who leaked the information.
