At least a dozen news organizations seeking information on dam inspections and safety in the wake of Midwestern flooding have been denied the information by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, citing the U.S. Patriot Act. The Investigative Reporters and Editors say the denials have been consistent since 2002. “The public interest in being updated on the condition of these dams outweighs the security concerns about giving out the information,” said IRE Executive Director Mark Horvit.
