A New Jersey township is trying to decide if it can discipline a firefighter whose request for e-mails between the township administrator and the mayor has touched off an investigation about whether the township falsely certified documents to a state agency. The township refused to release the two e-mails, and the firefighter appealed to the New Jersey Records Committee, winning an hearing. Meanwhile, the township sought permission to destroy 12 records, including the two e-mails. Now the committee is investigating whether the township, in its request for a destruction permit, falsely certified the e-mail documents. (2/19/07)
