“Legal rights and risks for journalists covering immigration enforcement”

Reporters Committee attorney Jen Nelson will lead a free training on legal risks and newsgathering rights for journalists covering immigration enforcement. The session will help journalists plan ahead, make informed decisions in real time, and protect themselves legally in unpredictable environments.

This legal training, featuring Reporters Committee attorney Gabe Rottman, will provide New York–based journalists with a clear understanding of their rights and responsibilities when covering immigration issues and encounters involving law enforcement. The session will address what reporters and photographers need to know when questioned while on assignment; how to respond if ordered to stop recording or photographing; and key considerations when reporting at or near immigration courthouses, detention centers, etc.
Attendees can register for virtual attendance via Zoom, or for in-person attendance at the offices of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP.
