FBI Drops Effort to Obtain Connecticut Library Records

The FBI tossed in the towel in its yearlong effort to get computer use records from four Connecticut librarians. The agency said the terrorism threat it was investigating had proved without merit. The librarians had objected to the request to disclose patron records and to a PATRIOT Act provision that they could not tell anyone about the request. The FBI announcement said that the records at issue involved use of a single computer for 45 minutes one day in February, 2005. (7/12/06)
