Florida Re-enacts Ban on Autopsy Photo Release

Florida legislators re-enacted the public-records loophole they carved five years ago in the aftermath of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s death, with the Florida Senate voting 38-0 to continue a 2001 law which prevents people from inspecting autopsy photos or video recordings unless they can convince a judge it would serve a valid public purpose. Open records advocates had argued the law should be narrowed to permit inspection but not copying without court permission. (5/5/06)
