The FOIA reform bill that had been held up for two months in the Senate was approved by voice vote after a flurry of negotiations provided a compromise by sponsors Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-VT, and John Cornyn, R-TX, with Sen. Jon Kyl, R-AZ, who had been blocking the bill’s move to the floor. A similar measure passed the House 308-117 in April. The legislation is designed to speed up the process by which the public gets government information, now plagued by long delays often used to deny information. It will have to reconciled with a House FOIA reform bill passed in March.
