FOIA Request Unveils Many Near Misses at Proposed Reactor Site

Dozens of small, “near-miss” episodes occur without public notification at the Idaho National Laboratory, each year, the Associated Press reported after obtaining records under the Freedom of Information Act. The U.S. Department of Energy wants to begin producing plutonium-238 at the site for the first time in decades. Congress just appropriated $40 million to begin developing an experimental nuclear power reactor. Activists have been pushing for public disclosure of small incidents in regular “occurrence reports.
