After then presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy promised, if elected, to fire J. Edgar Hoover as FBI director, the agency took sufficient interest in McCarthy to open up and build a 500 page file. The Associated Press, which obtained the file through a Freedom of Information Act request, said the file included clippings and memos on McCarthy’s comments about Hoover, including letters from agents writing letters of glowing support for the director.
