A suit in Santa Clara over the cost of geographic information system data has prompted the California county to stop selling the data, citing security concerns. It’s the newest wrinkle in the long-running dispute between government agencies and private interests over GIS information. Some say the security issue is bogus and the real interest is making a profit on sale of geospatial data. Meanwhile, the county has indicated that as a result of a new study, its price for the requested base map might drop from $250,000 to $22,000. (5/7/07)
