Honolulu Police Lose Bid to Keep Whistleblower Records Secret

An federal appeal court rejected a three-year effort by Honolulu police and the U.S. Justice Department to keep secret documents alleging wrongdoing in city’s Criminal Intelligence Unit. The court upheld a federal magistrate who said the records, part of a whistleblower lawsuit, to be turned over to the Honolulu Advertiser. “The ruling means court records that should be open can’t be kept secret based on vague assertions by government officials,” Advertiser Editor Saundra Keyes said.
