House Approves FOIA Reform, Two Other Open Records Bills

Brushing aside White House opposition, and a veto threat, the House passed three bills to open government records to the public. The measures would force government to be more responsive to Freedom of Information Act requests, overturn a 2001 presidential directive limiting access to historic presidential records, and make public the names of contributors to presidential libraries. All three bills received bipartisan support. Meanwhile, the Senate was hearing testimony supporting similar FOIA reform legislation. (3/14/07)
