The House Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would give reporters protection from being forced to reveal confidential sources in federal court. Currently, 32 states and the District of Columbia have similar reporter-source protection laws. The bill has an exemption for national security matters and also allows a judge to direct a reporter to testify if all reasonable alternative sources of obtaining the information critical to the case have been exhausted.
